How: By giving more rides in one month than ever before in agency history
Fresh on the heels of setting an all-time annual ridership record, PSTA officials are again re-writing their record books – this time to record the highest monthly ridership mark ever. Preliminary estimates indicate that the agency provided 1,287,301 rides last month, which is more than any other month in agency history! That’s an increase of more than 16,000 over the previous monthly mark set in March 2012 and a 14% increase as compared to October 2011.
The October number gives PSTA its 12th consecutive monthly record and is a strong start toward setting yet another annual ridership mark in 2013. Last year, PSTA’s ridership jumped by more than 915,000, which is a 7% increase over 2010/11. Transit officials across the country say that a 2 to 3% annual increase is considered a strong gain, so for PSTA to more than double that mark is an outstanding showing.
PSTA officials say many factors play a role in boosting ridership including record-breaking tourism, rising fuel prices, and an improving economy. Approximately half of all PSTA riders are going to and from work, and leaders are optimistic that the ridership gains are a sign of a strengthening economy.
In light of this record ridership and demand for transit, PSTA leaders are working on a comprehensive, community-wide bus plan that features transit-friendly land use and a potential light rail transit corridor. PSTA staff is partnering with local leaders and the community to ensure that the new plan will maximize resources and provide more efficient and effective transit service for residents, visitors, and businesses.
